I have gone through every hairstyle known to black woman. From weaves and braids and ponytails, to short hair that ranged in color from blue black, to white blonde to browns and I am now on a burgundy red. I have had perms, jerri curls, texturizers and everything in between. But I got tired of the chemical burns. My last relaxer took of a silver dollar sized patch of skin on my forehead and had my head bleeding for a week. That was the last straw. One month after that dreadful perm job, I took some barber shears and shaved my head! I couldn't stop and by the time I was done I had less than a quearter inch of hair on my head and the biggest grin on my face!!! I came out of the bathroom beaming andf my family looked at me with shock in thier eyes! LOL...they thought I had gone crazy!
I knew I wanted locks at that point. So I vowed to grow my natural hair to accomodate that venture. I skimmed every website and natural hair book that I could get my hands on. Then one day I ran accross Sandy's hair journal and I was hooked! I joined lockitup and decided that SisterLocks was the locks I had to have!
The problem was the cost and convincing my lady that I was done with the different hairstyles and this would not be a wasted cost.
She had traditional locks and didn't understand why it should cost so much. Anyway, after many conversations with her and pictures of SisterLocks that I threw at her (lol...I was abit obsessed!), she agree'd that if I was sure that is what I wanted, we could make it happen.
So then I went on to call every consultant in Toronto and decided on one named Avalon. Her personality was amazing and her salaon was warm and inviting! It was the first black salon that I have ever walked into that I didn't get 'the looks'.
I was pleasantly surprised...so we spoke for a while and I got some test locks and I fell further in love with Sisterlocks! The problem was the money. I racked my brains to try and figure out I was going to save it...especially at this time...it's December! So I made a tentative appoiuntment for the second weekend in January and prayed that something would present itself so I could get my Sisterlocks.
So I was just chilling around the house one evening a week later when the phone rang. It was my consultant asking me how my hair was! I was so surprised because I didn't know they would check up on you a week later! Anyway she asked me to come to the shop on Saturday so she could look at my hair and see how it has been going. I was only to pleased to make the trip to spend more time at her lovely shop. My lady and one of my girls had to go to work that day, so my 14 year old accompanied me to Celebrity Hair for my appointment. I got there I was greeted warmly by Avalon and waited patiently while she finished up with her customer. While I waited I chated on the phone with my lady and fliped through the Sisterlock book for the 4th time.
Then I went to the chair and had my locks checked. Avalon was very pleased with them but she asked me a weird question...she asked if i brough lunch. I said no why would I bring lunch?? My lady started laughing on the phone and my daughter was grinning from ear to ear but it wasn't registering!! Then she said 'BECAUSE YOU ARE GETTING YOUR LOCKS TODAY!!!' My lady was telling me Merry Christmas and my daughter was laughing and clapping and blowing me kisses! I was soooo shocked and it took me a minute to figure out what they all we saying!!! I was in tears and so happy! Well I gladly sat for 11 hours with 2 breaks and got my medium to small Sisterlocks installed! We stared at 12:30 in the afternoo and she finished them at 11:30 in the night! The time slipped by as we laughed and shared stories with each other. My family came to keep me company and bring me food and I felt so loved! Avalon did an amazing job! Her skill and speed are amazing! And I thank her for her generousity.
I had an amazing start to this journey and I am looking forward to the long haul.
Over the last year I have gotten so much information and would like to thank the ladies of the lock it up group for sharing their pictures, stories, and time! I am glad to now be a member of the Sisterlock family!

Charmaine-18 hours Sisterlocked!
By the way...I love my sisterlocks!
